Spoken in the Jetavana Grove.
1
In people who live carelessly, craving increases like ivy growing round a tree. They race around day after day, like monkeys in the forest seeking fruit.
2
By this craving you poison yourself. You are tormented in this world like a tree choked with ivy, and your suffering greatly increases.
3
Whoever in this world overcomes this vicious craving so hard to transcend will find that suffering falls away like drops of water falling from a flower.
4
I give you good counsel; may you all take heed: Cut craving at its source. For if you want the healing root, you must first cut down the plant.
